SALEM (CBS) – A wrong-way driver might have been the cause of an accident that left the driver and his passenger dead and sent two people to the hospital, Salem Police said.
The five-vehicle accident occurred on Highland Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

“Northbound in the southbound lane of Highland Avenue here and struck at least four other vehicles,” said Salem Police Chief Lucas Miller.

A male driver and a female passenger in a Ford Focus believed to have been going the wrong way were pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman in the Focus and a person in another car were both taken to the hospital with injuries believed to be serious, but not life-threatening. Police said the Focus hit at least four other cars.

The road was closed in both directions as police cleared the crash. Investigators are now looking to nearby surveillance cameras to figure out where that car entered, traveling the wrong way.
