Is There Mail on Labor Day? USPS, UPS, FedEx Openings and Post Deliveries


The United States will mark the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 5.

The federal holiday is celebrated annually on the first Monday in September to honor and recognize the American labor movement.

Though Monday is the official holiday, Labor Day is generally marked throughout the three-day weekend it falls on. While many enjoy the long weekend that marks the unofficial end of summer, the holiday does involve some major changes to the schedules of some public services.

Is There Mail on Labor Day?

USPS

The U.S. Postal Service observes 11 official holidays annually, one of them being Labor Day.

A United States Postal Service (USPS) representative told Newsweek that there will be no residential or business deliveries on Monday, September 5. The only exception to this is mail that has been sent via Priority Mail Express, which is delivered 365 days a year.

On Monday, September 5, post offices will also be closed. They will be open as usual on Saturday, September 3 but after they close they won’t open again until Tuesday, September 6.

The next public holiday USPS will close for is Columbus Day, which is on Monday, October 10.

FedEx

FedEx only offers select delivery services on the Labor Day holiday, as well as the days leading up to it. Their Labor Day weekend schedule can be seen below:

Friday, September 2

  • FedEx Express: Open
  • FedEx Ground: Open
  • FedEx Home Delivery: Open
  • FedEx Ground Economy: Open
  • FedEx Office: Open

Saturday, September 3

  • FedEx Express: Open
  • FedEx Ground: Closed
  • FedEx Home Delivery: Open
  • FedEx Ground Economy: Closed
  • FedEx Office: Open

Sunday, September 4

  • FedEx Express: Closed
  • FedEx Ground: Closed
  • FedEx Home Delivery: Open
  • FedEx Ground Economy: Closed
  • FedEx Office: Modified hours (some branches may close early, so check your local store for exact hours)

Monday, September 5

  • FedEx Express: Closed

All FedEx services will open again on Tuesday, September 6.

UPS

According to the company’s website, Labor Day is also a holiday for UPS.

According to the company’s website, there will be no UPS pickup or delivery service and all UPS Store locations will be closed on September 5.

The UPS website said that UPS Critical Care service is available on the holiday and customers should call 800-714-8779 or visit upsexpresscritical.com.

As well as changes to mail and package delivery services over Labor Day weekend, trash departments will also be on holiday. This means pickup for some states will not be happening on Labor Day, though some will be operating as normal.
